Culbin Bar Kidney Vetch Survey 23rd July
Organiser: RSPB in conjunction with BC Highland Branch
Target Species: Kidney Vetch (Foodplant of Small Blue Butterfly)
Date: Sunday 23rd July
Meeting place: Forestry Commission car park at Cloddymoss. Grid ref: NH982599.
Description: A survey of Kidney vetch, the food plant of the Small Blue butterfly, on the remote Nairn Bar.
The RSPB reserve at Culbin sands supports a small local population of the Small Blue butterfly. Kidney Vetch is the sole food plant of the larvae that live in the flower heads feeding on the developing anthers and seeds. The survey will establish the presence and locations of kidney vetch on Nairn Bar to help plan future habitat management work for the benefit of Small Blue butterfly.
Approx duration: Up to 8 hours! Nairn bar is remote and cut off from the mainland during high tides. It will therefore not be possible to return to the mainland until 17:00.
What’s needed: Please bring lunch and enough food and water for a full day out and dress for the weather.
Any other information:
There is the possibility of a second survey group working out of Kingsteps, which would not involve so much walking. So, if you are not so fit but would still like to help out, please contact Izzy.
