Small Dark Yellow Underwing Caterpillar Search

Foregin Estate, near Carrbridge

Saturday 22nd June

10.30am till 3pm

Small Dark Yellow Underwing caterpillars have never been found in the wild in Scotland.  The discovery of their larvae is important as it should help determine more precisely the conditions they require.  Foregin Estate, just north-west of Carrbridge, has been one of the most regular sites for recording adults in recent years, so it seems a sensible place to look for the early stages.

A previous search at night at the same site in 2017 failed to find any caterpillars, however, this year we plan to search for the caterpillars during the day using a Bugvac, which is akin to a leaf blower in reverse and specifically designed to safely sample invertebrates.

We are therefore seeking help to go through the samples taken in the field, as well as survey other species we encounter.

Please meet at 10.30am at the track that leads to Foregin off the A938 between Carrbridge and the A9 (Grid reference NH883241).  You are welcome to attend even if you can only make it for an hour or so, although we will probably continue searching until about 3pm.

Tea/coffee and possibly even cake will be provided but please bring a washing up bowl, or similar, to aid sorting through the contents of the Bugvac.  A hand lens may also be useful and a packed lunch if you are staying all day.

Everyone is welcome, in fact the more the merrier.

Please note it is not advisable to use the Bugvac in the rain or if the vegetation is wet, so in the unlikely event that the weather is inclement, we may have to cancel.  If in doubt and/or if you want more information please contact;
