Glenfeshie east scrub-bashing October 30th 2021

By Hilary Swift

Twelve eager volunteers turned up at the eastern side of Glenfeshie, at what is labelled on the OS map as “Workings” – an old quarry area which is now regenerating with Scots Pine.

We were given permission by Forest and Land Scotland to remove young trees and broom, and to plant the area with butterfly foodplants: Kidney Vetch, Bird’s-foot Trefoil and Common Dog Violet.

While the current thinking to combat climate change is to plant trees, we were there to pull them up!  Why?  Well, the other crisis at the moment is the biodiversity one, and we at Butterfly Conservation Highland Branch are trying to address this in areas where we can.

The morning was spent clearing the site then, after lunch, we got down to planting the circa 700 plugs.  By teatime, when most people were beginning to flag, there were still about 200 plants to go in the ground.   It sounded a lot, but divided up between us, it wasn’t so bad.  Another half an hour and our mission was accomplished!

As usual, the company was great, there was plenty of laughter and the weather held out for us.  However, at breaks, there was discussion about COP26 and a lot of cynicism about what it may bring, or rather, what it probably won’t bring!  Sad face emoji.  But, it was still an enjoyable day.  Hopefully, we have done our bit.

It was great to have three new young volunteers, to help the remainder ageing stalwart core - they had all made a huge effort to come along, so many thanks girls!
