DESCRIPTION

Upperside of wings are dark greyish-brown. Small circles on underside give this butterfly its name.

Wingspan 42 - 48mm (male), 46 -52mm (female).

LIFE CYCLE

Single brooded. Ova (non adhesive) dropped around base of grasses, hatching in about 18 days. Larvae overwinter, emerging to feed in mild weather. During the Spring, they feed at night, becoming fully fed by June. Pupae hatch in about 2 weeks.

FLIGHT TIMES

Late June to mid August.

REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION

A species which in 2004 and 2005 underwent considerable expansion through Moray and into Highland. May be found on both coastal and inland sites.
